Even from a very young age, I’ve always remembered loving to draw, create and explore the world around me. I would often spend hours drawing and painting what I observed. When I turned thirteen a family friend gifted me with watercolor classes at Pat Catans, a local art store. With this gift I was able to go to class every week and learn different watercolor techniques and skills, and after the first session, I was hooked. To this day I credit that experience for completely opening up a new door to me where I fell in love with the art world. Immersing myself in a painting or drawing was the closest I’d ever been to finding true peace within myself. I couldn’t get enough, and I realized that this could very well become much more than just a hobby: it became my passion. After that experience I continued to hone my skills with advanced art classes throughout high school as well as working on independent projects.
When it was time to think about college, I pretty much knew without a doubt that I wanted to be an art teacher. I’ve always been fascinated with art. Whether I’m creating it or viewing it, I’ve never felt more at peace than the way I do when I’m immersed in the art world. As well as finding a passion for art, I also discovered a love for children. I’ve always been fascinated by their openness to new ideas and concepts. Children are always willing to learn, asking questions and exploring the world around them. I become excited whenever I think of helping others in finding the same peace and joy through art that I receive myself. I feel like a life isn’t really lived to the fullest if a person never experiences the sheer joy of unhindered creativity. This is why I finally decided to put these two passions together and began seeking a degree in Art Education.
Along with my Education degree, I have also received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and have extensive experience in the studio as well as exhibiting my work in various galleries. Printmaking and painting are my preferred mediums, and I utilize collages and mixed media elements to complete my works of art. Everyday I’m excited to learn a new technique or method and I look forward to the day that I can relate this knowledge to my students. Not only am I fueling my passion, I am also picking up important skills that I will later utilize in my own work as well as in the classroom. I hope to continue not only teaching in the classroom, but also staying active in the art market, displaying my work in shows and setting a good example for my students that might choose to go down the same career path.
There’s nothing like the satisfaction of creating. There’s also nothing like the satisfaction and joy one receives from helping a child to find this same satisfaction for themselves, when they can create their own painting, sculpture or drawing. I’ve always been passionate about artwork, and if I can guide students in any way possible to help them find their own passion, or an outlet for expression, there’s no greater reward. This is the essence of why I’m striving to be not only an art teacher, but a facilitator, helper and guide for students as they travel the wacky, exhilarating road to creativity.
